93/100 MARKING COMMENTS

Research & Planning 19/20:It is hard to know exactly what else this candidate could add to this research and planning blog!  The planning and thought that has gone into their product is clear and has clearly been influenced by extensive research.  Excellent work throughout in both planning and research.  What is clear is there is a sense of organisation and application that is not often seen.  Excellent use of a variety of websites which demonstrate an excellent use of digital technology and ICT skills.  Time management has been excellent throughout and there are drafts and re-drafts of shooting schedules, all supported by an in depth production log.  Excellent!

Main Text 36/40:
An excellent music video, as an artefact it is polished, cohesive and looks like a completed media text.  There are some issues which hold the artefact back (lighting is a problem as is use of the camera/camera language at times) but they do not stop it from being placed firmly in L4.  There is evidence of excellence in technical skills and editing seen in the stop animation, the split screen and the rolling editing towards the end where the audience see the couple on their way to a believed meeting.  The lip synching is excellent demonstrating skill in the matching of audio and visual but they perhaps could have utilised this element further (perhaps have her singing at the piano?).  Excellent material on the whole, although as discussed there are shots which could be improved but credit to this group who not only re-shot scenes but also managed three different cuts of the final video, each time improving the completed piece.  Marks higher for Subramaniam, Anand due to the amount of extra work this candidate put in during the edit stage.

Ancillary Task 1 (CD Cover) 10/10:
Personally we think that the completed artefact would work better without the montage of ‘couple’ photographs on the inlay sleeve, however, as the group has done more than what was asked of them it is easy to overlook that sleeve.  That said the front and back cover are excellent demonstrating an excellent understanding of conventions, excellent skill in the chosen programme (Photoshop) and an excellent level of creativity.  The product looks like a ‘real text’ and there has clearly been a lot of hard work gone into this piece.  This artefact clearly demonstrates the candidates ability, skill and understanding of the subject and is awarded top level for being an outstanding piece of work.

Ancillary Text 2 (Magazine Advert) 10/10:
Excellent work, well conceived and well realised.  The finish is excellent and the understanding of both conventions and branding is excellent.  Clearly the group have researched their text as well as planned it.  A well taken photograph which gives the audience a sense of genre as well as appropriate logos and institutions selected to enhance the artefact.  Excellent technical skill and excellent manipulation of the images.

Evaluation 19/20:
Full marks awarded for a well thought out, well presented, interesting and comprehensive evaluation.  There is evidence of excellence in all required areas and this candidate has put a huge amount of effort into his work.  Credit for providing a variety of ways of answering the key questions and presenting information.  Excellent skill in the use of technology and excellent ability to communicate, a standout piece of work.

Research & Planning 19/20:Excellent research and planning work, which also demonstrates the on-going skills this group used when creating their completed artefacts.  The work is well presented and on the whole there are proficient communication skills (some literacy issues).  The on-going production log demonstrates the work that was on-going and an excellent sense of time management and organisation.  There is drafting (both drawn and also experiments on Photoshop), which show again the on-going process that took place. Excellent planning and excellent research, as with the rest of this group I am unsure of what they could do to improve!

Evaluation 19/20:
An excellent evaluation.  Varied and appropriate selection in methods of presentation, excellent demonstration of ICT and digital technology skills.  Excellent understanding of the forms and conventions of the given mediums, well analysed and discussed in reference to their own artefacts.  The evaluation of new media is in depth, extensive and varied, demonstrating this candidates understanding of new media and its role in creating media texts.  Excellent understanding of the combination of the three artefacts and the need to brand products, also touches upon the role each artefact would take place and the flow of consumption.  Excellent work on audience.

Research & Planning 19/20:
An excellent planning and research folder.  Credit for this candidate and their group for being so well organised (this is clear from their research and planning and on-going production log), their time management was excellent, evident from the fact they were able to re-shoot/edit their final artefact a number of times to ensure it was up to their required standard.  Excellent research and excellent planning all of which have clearly influenced the practical process.

Evaluation 19/20:
As with the other members of this candidates group this is an excellent evaluation demonstrating knowledge, understanding, analytical skills as well as organisation and excellent time keeping.  There is excellent work in all areas of the evaluation showing a broad understanding of the media concepts asked to be explored.  The work has been influenced by their audience and the evaluation is presented in a varied and innovative way.  Excellent.

Research & Planning 18/20:
An excellent blog with all that is required completed to a high standard and posted.  There is a variety of research and it has clearly influenced the planning.  The research is of a very high standard and has clearly given the candidate a good knowledge of the medium.  The planning is of a very high standard and what is nice to see is the on-going reflections and rejected work, demonstrating consistent thought going into the final product.  You get the feel that this candidate used their blog in a professional way, updating and altering it to keep a diary of what was happening.  Excellent work throughout in both the execution of turning planning into production as well as an in depth production log detailing organisation and time management.

Main Text 36/40:
A pleasant, entertaining response with some clever touches and an all round understanding of the medium and genre.  A technically able group able to produce this ‘fun’ music video demonstrating knowledge and understanding of both the conventions required in the medium as well as an understanding of audience and possible attractions of this genre of music.  Some very nice touches (the heartbreak motif for example) combine with a neat and complete mini narrative along with the coda at the end.  There are some issues which hold this back but these are not intrusive or obstructive.  Excellent work.

Ancillary Task 1 (CD Cover) 10/10:
An excellent response to the task, the candidates have worked well together to create this excellent artefact which demonstrates creativity, ability, technical skills and understanding.  The images chosen work very well both within this artefact and alongside the other texts submitted.  Fonts are well chosen and the colour/black and white motif running through is an appropriate and successful touch.  Conceptually interesting (and deceptively simple), excellent work.

Ancillary Text 2 (Magazine Advert) 10/10:
Again this works follows on nicely from the elements submitted.  Includes all the conventions one would expect and the central image works in much the same way as the image elsewhere in the package which demonstrates the candidates excellent understanding.  The ‘feel is continued in this final artefact and through the whole project there is a real sense that the candidate’s understand what is required to create a promo package, excellent work.

Evaluation 16/20:
An excellent response to the task which does all that is asked but lacks the flair and depth to take it further into L4.  The ICT skills used and selection of form to present the evaluation are hampered slightly by the use of PPT although the comparative/analysis grid involved in Q1 is excellent.  All questions are answered and answered well although with only flashes of excellence.  There is proficient understanding of the relationship between the three products and as mentioned before the level of understanding of conventions & genre is very good.  Audience feedback is used although I feel there could be more comments made on how audience feedback was utilised and the changes the group made as a result, although credit for collating a wide range of responses.

Research & Planning 19/20:
An excellent example of a planning and research blog with all that was asked for and more posted.  This candidate has clearly taken the lead in the group and strived to ensure all work is of a high standard.  Excellent research into ‘real’ texts and good to see research informing planning.  Production log proves that organisation has been a key element of this successful piece of coursework, this is enhanced by the photos taken to demonstrate the process.  Just misses out on top marks as I feel there could be a wider variety of digital technologies used, but excellent none the less!

Evaluation 14/20:
A proficient response which demonstrates some excellent but not a sustained amount to take it into L4.  The candidate clearly (from their R & P work) has put a lot of thought and effort into their completed artefacts but I feel that when reflecting and evaluating their project they have done well, but not excellently. There is good understanding of conventions and it is a nicely presented presentation (I like the collages with their artefact amongst ‘real texts’) but doesn’t really get to the bottom of what the question is asking, with little mention of the challenging or enhancing of genre & conventions.  There clearly has been audience feedback and there is one comment on the effect the feedback had but again I feel that more could have been done to develop and analyse the feedback they received.  The evaluation is presented nicely and with some use of digital technology but again there could have been more (audio for audience feedback etc).  It is proficient with potential!

Research & Planning 19/20:An excellent research and planning folder.  The planning stages are well documented as is the documented on-going decisions and alterations made.  Plenty of planning, both in drawn format and digital (alterations/fonts/images etc) demonstrates the thought that was put into the completed artefacts.  Time management has been excellent throughout the research and planning stage and this candidate was a driving force within the group.  All the work is complete and well-presented and there isn’t anything else the candidate could have added.  Credit for putting together something so comprehensive and ensuring it is updated to create this online process.  Research is in depth and analytical.  An excellent blog.

Main Text 34/40:
A music video which is let down by their performer, something which as markers and moderators we over look but for us it has a bearing on the completed artefact.  With such an impassive rendition of the song during the initial lip synching scenes the video starts at a merely proficient level.  Thankfully it does get better, it goes on to show excellent technical skill (the stop animation scenes are a nice touch and work very well), excellent understanding (the sense of a narrative piece which has a beginning, middle and end) and a good knowledge of the conventions.  Editing is of a high level and has been completed so that meaning is apparent.  The POV shots whilst a nice idea doesn’t quite work and it would have been nice to have an ending to the video, perhaps some sort of coda?  Overall, an excellent video with some proficient elements.  Higher marks awarded to Halai, Neha (6081) and Mills, Samantha (6125) due to the absence of Kerai, Jaymini (6011) and their extended involvement in the project.

Ancillary Task 1 (CD Cover) 8/10:
A response which is easily proficient but falls just short of excellence.  There is awareness of conventions, there is understanding of genre and an obvious target audience.  Unfortunately the main image looks too dour and despite the nice effects added to it (demonstrating technical skills) it fails to really show creativity and an awareness of what is required.  The back of the CD cover looks good and the silhouette works well.

Ancillary Text 2 (Magazine Advert) 8/10:
A proficient response which demonstrates awareness of conventions and understanding of layout but lacks the creativity and spark of top level work.  The effect of having the poster ‘torn’ is a good idea and works to create a level of creativity but once again this artefact would perhaps have benefitted from a re-shoot.  The main image, although being framed appropriately and proficiently suiting the genre doesn’t stand up to much attention.  Everything that should be on there is on there but more could have been made of this artefact, proficient none the less.

Evaluation 17/20:
A complete and well thought out evaluation, well presented and using a variety of software and websites to present the information.  All questions are answered and answered to an excellent level demonstrating this candidate’s understanding and appreciation of the key media concepts.  I feel there could have been more feedback from the audience (audio or perhaps visual) but the work demonstrates the candidate understands the role audiences play in practical production.  Q4 (new technologies) does feature a variety of devices/sites/software etc. but lacks the work of top L4 productions.  It is an excellent evaluation.

Research & Planning 16/20:Evidence of in depth, excellent research into similar products with an excellent understanding of conventions of music videos on display in this candidates extended analysis of the given medium.  This group (and specifically this student at times) suffered from poor time management, occasionally due to motivation.  The research element of this blog is excellent so to is the planning stage.  There are little bits that let this candidate down (a simplistic storyboard being one) but there is lots here to credit.  The level of ICT skills on display is excellent as is the presentation of the research and planning.  Organisation was proficient and time management was OK but there is enough here to award it L4.

Main Text 30/40:
Time management was an issue for this candidate (and their group) and this has had an effect on a lot of work submitted by them.  This candidate could be evasive, often being absent from lessons and the only way the work was completed was in a mad dash at the end.  Whilst this is by and large a completed blog (there are one or two items missing), having marked it recently a fair amount has been added in the last week!  This research and planning folder bodes the question “what has this student been doing”?  There is a proficient amount of work into the technical completion of the print artefacts but these lack research (on Adele/Duffy cover). Some really good, in depth analysis of music videos (candidates were asked to submit 5, there are 4 here) demonstrates that this candidate has the ability, it seems they lacked the inclination.   There is some work done but it isn’t of a consistent standard failing to understand the link between a well-planned final project and a well-executed and completed piece.  Too often excuses were found to not do work, very disappointing.

Ancillary Task 1 (CD Cover) 8/10:
A proficient response which demonstrates skill, knowledge and understanding.  Some well taken photographs and good skill demonstrated in the edit means this is a very good response.  There is ability evident in creating this artefact but it lacks some of the finish expected of top grade submissions.  A pleasing aesthetic is achieved with continuity with the promo with typography and 'feel'.  Appropriately framed and finished on the PC.

Ancillary Text 2 (Magazine Advert) 4/10:
This artefact is a real disappointment for us.  Three students who are all able and skilled on Photoshop have produced something well below par.  There are some simple mistakes (the iTunes logo has not been cut around, there is a strange growth from the side of the main image) and these you would hope would have been spotted and remedied.  There is basic understanding evident in the composition (the placing of the copy at the top) the main image does not demonstrate proficient skill in the taking of the photo or the edit and there seems to be little creative spark behind it.  A basic response.

Evaluation 18/20:
An excellent response.  There is excellent use of digital technology and ICT in the evaluation, the use of Prezzie avoided going through even more PPT slides on Slideshare and the use of audio to provide feedback worked very well.  Excellent understanding of the forms and conventions with a good choice of ‘real texts’ to compare with.  There is excellent understanding of the use of new media (although I question whether a tripod is ‘new media’!) and excellent understanding of the combination of the main task and the ancillary texts.  Audience feedback is discussed in detail and has clearly influenced the final artefacts, demonstrating the candidates understanding of the significance of audience feedback.  The evaluation is well presented and in a variety of well used formats, excellent ability to communicate.
